Robert Burns Lodge Happenings 2015

On this page, your humble webmaster will attempt to relate what has most recently happened in our Lodge.  Mostly these will be items from recent meetings, but occasionally other items will appear here.  The webmaster hopes these notes will help to keep the Brethren current on happenings in the Lodge, and entice them to come to the next event.  If you are interested in what went on at past meetings, check out our Happenings 2013 or Happenings 2014.

Brothers, this page has come to look more like the minutes of our meetings because as both Webmaster and Secretary it is cumbersome to re-type the meeting events in a conversational style. Thus, I shall post here the minutes of the meetings, with certain parts added or deleted as necessary.

15 December: The Lodge was opened on the FC Degree at 7:30 pm by WM John Hart at the Edmonds Masonic Center. Approximately 16 Brothers were present, including one visitor, FC Bro. Romann Libermann of Edmonds #165.

 The Secretary announced that the minutes of the previous meetings will henceforth be available at the Tiler’s register, and will no longer be read. He read correspondence from Bros. Adam Campbell, Bob Wilcox, and Larry Blair.

Bills were read & paid, and receipts managed accordingly.

The Secretary announced that two Brothers are to be dropped on 31 December if they do not pay their 2014 and 2015 dues, or make some other arrangement. He also asked if any Brother had contact with Bro. Jefferson Gray, as his mail is returned and phone disconnected. The Secretary inquired on the activity of the Audit Committee, and it was reported that they will meet following the meeting.

The Lodge was closed in due form , peace and harmony prevailing, by the WM at 9:30 pm.

5 December: Today we held our installation of officers for 2016. While there are many repeat positions in the Lodge, we anticipate a great year!

1 December: This Special Meeting was held for the purposes of elections as permitted by the Grand Master’s dispensation copied on the minutes page for the cancelled 17 November Stated Meeting. As such, no formal business not directly related to the election was conducted.

The Lodge was opened on the FC Degree at 7:00 pm by WM John Hart. Approximately 16 Brothers were in attendance, with no visitors. After opening, Bro. Mike Lillie gave his Second Degree proficiency via the full-form posting lecture at the altar with Bro. Brent Wandel, his coach. The WM then called down to the First Degree to admit an EA. The WM stated that the Third Degree for Bro. Mike will be on 5 January.

The Lodge held elections for the 2015-2016 Masonic Year. The Following were elected:

 The Lodge then voted, at the request of the WM-elect to hold an open installation of officers at 10 am on 5 December, 2015. The WM also appointed an Audit Committee consisting of WB Scott Wallinger, WB Mark Goldberg, and Bro. Alex Boras.

The non-payment of dues by two Brothers was discussed, as was the medical status of another. The Secretary announced the death of Bro. Evander Corley of Auburn, of which we were just informed, although he passed away on 7 December 2014.

The Secretary announced that Bros. James Comet and Amos Chapman will be going over 50 years in 2016.

The Lodge discussed the results of the Turkey Trot for the Lynnwood Food Bank, where $1653 and over 800 lb. of food were raised. WB Appel thanked the Brothers who volunteered. He also announced the dates for upcoming Bikes-for-Books giveaways.

The WM then called back up to the Second Degree, and the minutes were approved, and Lodge closed in due form by the WM, with VWB Haynes giving the closing charge, peace and harmony prevailing, at 8:20 pm.

17 November: In accordance with section 13.14 of the WMC, the Stated Communication of Robert Burns #243 for 17 November, AD 2015, AL 6015, was cancelled by WM John Hart. The Edmonds Masonic Center was without power, and numerous fallen trees and power lines resulting from a windstorm made the trip to Lodge too hazardous.

 As elections for the 2015-2016 year were to be held that evening, dispensation from the Grand Master was issued via e-mail to the Lodge to hold elections on a subsequent evening, prior to the 5 December planned date for the installation. WM John Hart determined that Tuesday, 1 December 2015 would be the Special Communication for the purpose of holding the elections.

20 October: The Lodge was opened on the EA Degree at 7:30 pm by WM John Hart. Approximately 24 Brothers were in attendance, including WB David Hoffman, SW of Edmonds #165, WB James Moran, WM of Alba 315, 4 Grand Lodge Committeemen, VWB Jim Hamlin, DDGM #8, and VWB Chris Haynes, DDGM #2. All were introduced, and the Masters, Committeemen, and Deputies were given the Public Grand Honors. It being Past Masters Night, also introduced were the Past Masters present, who were brought east of the Altar and given the Public Grand Honors.

A scroll was read in remembrance of WB Ron Thompson, and has been given to his family.

The Secretary read the minutes of the 1 September stated meeting for information only.

Correspondence was read, including two memoranda from Grand Lodge dated 11 September and 6 October regarding the expulsion of Jud Parker and the suspension of Jacob Vaughan and Derek Lathrope.

The Treasurer gave a brief report of the Lodge finances. Bills were read and approved, having been reviewed by the Finance Committee.

The Secretary reported that Bro. Les Harrington has been re-instated, but that there are 2 Brothers in danger of being dropped NPD come 31 December. VWB Bob Nygren gave a brief Masonic Trivia lesson, and WB Matthew Appel gave a 5-minute presentation on the 24-Inch Gauge. He also gave an extensive report on the preparations for the Turkey Trot. He then reported that the bikes for all 3 B4B schools have been delivered.

VWB Bob Nygren offered tickets for the reception of the MWGM to the district on 6 November, and WB James Moran invited the Lodge to the next meeting of Lodge Alba, on 7 November.  The JW announced a visit to Shoreline Lodge on 3 November.

WB Scott Wallinger reported that there is still no change on the status of our Bible, as the Brother working on it has been hospitalized. The WM discussed that next month will be elections, and the Treasurer asked about the status of the Investment Committee paperwork, which was tabled by the WM while awaiting more information.

In his closing remarks, VWB Haynes praised the Lodge for undertaking the process of completing surveys and contemplating where we need to go. He offered his help, or that of the District Education Team. His comments were well received.

The minutes were approved, and Lodge closed in due form by the WM, with VWB Haynes giving the closing charge, peace and harmony prevailing, at 8:55 pm.

1 September: The Lodge was opened on the EA Degree at 7:30 pm by WM John Hart. Approximately 15 Brothers were in attendance, the only visitor being RWB Warren Schoeben, Senior Grand Warden, who was introduced in the East and given the Public Grand Honors.

The Secretary read the minutes of the 2 June stated meeting for information only.

Correspondence was read, including a memorandum from Grand Lodge dated 15 June regarding the suspension of Jud Parker. The Secretary also reported on the status of the by-laws change, and summarized the new plastic dues cards to be issued this year. The Secretary also related that the Lodge is awaiting notification that Les Harrington has been reinstated by Grand Lodge.

The Treasurer gave a brief report of the Lodge finances. Bills were read and approved, having been reviewed by the Finance Committee. There were no receipts, except from the investments. There were no checks written over the summer.

The Master said that the third Tuesday of September will be a planning meeting at the Edmonds Masonic Center at 7 pm. He also appealed to the Brothers for dinners, and VWB Steve Wandel offered to cook for the October stated, which is to be Past Masters night. Two other Brothers volunteered to cook for November and December. The Master intends to visit Shoreline Lodge as soon as we are able, when the by-laws change is official.

WB Scott Wallinger reported that there is no change on the status of our Bible, as the Brother working on it has been hospitalized. The Secretary reported extensively on the Turkey Trot preparations with the Lynnwood Food Bank, and received several offers of help and suggestions to accomplish the task better.

The Secretary announced the visit of the MWGM to the district on 6 November, and reported briefly on the Rainbow Assembly. The WM asked for the help of the Brothers with another charity with which he is involved, Child Strive.

In his closing remarks, RWB Schoeben related the status of VWB Karl Warren, and recommended the Lodge apply the ideas of the MWGM, “Learn and Change” to the Lodge. The comments were well received by the Lodge.

The minutes were approved, and Lodge closed in due form by the WM, with RWB Schoeben giving the closing charge, peace and harmony prevailing, at 9:25 pm.

 

2 June: The Lodge was opened on the EA Degree at 7:30 pm by WM John Hart.  He then called the Lodge free from restraint to prepare for the First Degree conferral for Mr. Jim Morris Fulton. The roles were as follows:

 Bro. John Hart delivered the apron lecture, the Working Tools were presented by Bro. Alex Boras, and the Lecture by WB Robert Wallinger. Bro. Jack Harris delivered the charge.

The Secretary read the minutes of the 5 May stated and 19 May special meetings for information only.

The Treasurer gave a full report of the Lodge finance. Bills were read and approved receipts were entered.

The Secretary announced the dates for the bikes-for-books presentations.

Bro. Alex Boras was called to the East by the WM, and paid his dues and signed the by-laws of the Lodge. He was presented with his apron insert by the Secretary.

The Working Tools were delivered by WB Scott Wallinger, the Lecture by Bro. Joshua Metz, Secretary of Esoterica #316. Bro. Jack Harris delivered the charge, after VWB Steven Wandel gave the ‘G’ lecture.

Introductions were made of Bro. Metz, as well as WB Ken Lane, Secretary of Krucible #318, and Bro. Richard Heston, JW of Esoterica #316.

The following announcements were made: the First Degree for Mr. Jim Fulton will be held on 2 June to be coordinated by the WM. The Secretary requested help contacting a prospective new member, Mr. D. Hunnicutt. The Secretary also reported on the status of the by-laws change, and announced the pre-registration requirement for Grand Lodge.

Before adjourning, the WM had WB James Hamlin stand, and had the Lodge render the Public Grand Honors, to congratulate him on being selected DDGM for District 8 beginning in June.

The minutes were approved, and Lodge closed in due form by the WM, peace and harmony prevailing, at 8:55 pm.

 

5 May: The Lodge was opened on the EA Degree at 7:30 pm by WM John Hart. Approximately 13 Brothers were present.

It was announced that Bro. Mike Lillie will be Passed to the degree of a Fellowcraft Mason on 19 May, to be coordinated by the WM. The First Degree for Mr. Jim Fulton will be held on 2 June.

The minutes of the 7 and 21 April meetings were read for information only, having been previously approved.

Correspondence to the Lodge was read, including the letter from Grand Lodge dated 30 April stating that Allan R. Peschek has been expelled for un-Masonic conduct. Also discussed were a letter from Chloe Toombs soliciting purchase of an ad in the Job’s Daughters’ program and the D&O Insurance packet from PayneWest Insurance. It was then placed on file.

The treasurer gave a brief report. Bills were read and approved, receipts were entered.

The Lodge voted on, and by a unanimous vote passed, the motion of the SW to permit the Secretary and Treasurer to pay usual, budgeted bills during the months of June, July, and August.

Bro. Alex Boras was called to the East by the WM, and paid his dues and signed the by-laws of the Lodge. He was presented with his apron insert by the secretary.

The Secretary announced that any member of the Lodge wishing to attend Grand Lodge must pre-register, and that the Official Visit of the MWGM to District 2 will be on 23 May at the Seattle Scottish Rite Center. Also, the WM announced a visit to Yancey C. Blalock Lodge on 12 May. It was announced that Bro. John Joseph has returned home from the rehabilitation center in which he had been recuperating. The JW announced that the June dinner would be potluck, and that the Brothers should contact him to make sure there are no duplicate food items.

The WM then read each Grand Lodge resolution, and the members present had a brief discussion on each, followed by a straw poll to determine the opinion of the Lodge as a whole.

21 April: The Lodge was opened on the MM Degree at 7:00 pm by WM John Hart at the Edmonds Masonic Center. Approximately 15 Brothers were present. WB David Hoffman, Grand Bible Bearer and SW of Edmonds #165, and WB David Burn were introduced. The Lodge proceeded directly to the Third Degree for Bro. Alex Boras, which was conferred by WM John Hart, with WB Josh Hamlin as Senior Deacon. WB Matt Appel delivered the lecture, with the charge by Bro. Jack Harris. The degree went quite well, and we congratulate our newest Master Mason!

 

7 April: The Lodge was opened on the EA Degree at 7:30 pm by WM John Hart at the Edmonds Masonic Center. Approximately 15 Brothers were present. WB Jimmy Norton, of the Grand Lodge Code Commission and VEC of Royal Arch was introduced from the East.

Bro. Mike Lillie completed the EA Posting Lecture with his mentor, Bro. Brent Wandel. His Second Degree was set for 17 May, to be coordinated by the WM. After completing his proficiency in good form, he expressed his gratitude to the Lodge in general, and specifically to Bro. Brent.

The WM called WB James Larson to the East to present him with a certificate of appreciation from the Grand Secretary for his many years of service to the Lodge, and declared him a “Secretary Emeritus.” The Lodge applauded him for his work, and gave him the Public Grand Honors.

The minutes of the 3 March stated were read for information only, having been previously approved.

Correspondence to the Lodge was read, including the letter from Grand Lodge dated 31 March stating that WB Patrick Marlatt has been suspended for 12 months for un-Masonic conduct. Also discussed were an e-mail from VWB Steve Wandel regarding the closing of the Segway account, a thank you note from Bethel 5 for our contribution, a note from the Edmonds Masonic Center regarding the lease and from Yancey C. Blalock regarding the upcoming youth night. It was then placed on file.

Bills for the operating fund and for the scholarship fund were read and approved: Operating: to the Edmonds Masonic Center for rent, to Grand Lodge for per capita and degree fees, to CNA Insurance for D&O insurance, to D2 LOA for District Meeting, and to Yancey C. Blalock for the upcoming youth night. Scholarship: to the Secretary for bikes and helmets. The Lodge also voted to approve a one-time expense to rent the Edmonds Masonic Center for a Third Degree rehearsal, and for Bro. Joe Julian as a thank-you gift for his work on our Lodge Bible. These checks will be written with the May rent check, and when the gift cards for Bro. Julian are purchased, respectively.

Receipts were entered, including dues for Bro. Dennis Wagner, who is now re-instated to full membership, and an additional donation from him. Also recorded was income from the Vanguard investments.

The Lodge voted on, and by a vote of 9 to 3 passed, the motion of the SW read at the last meeting to change the by-laws to have our stated meeting on the 3rd Tuesday.

The Secretary also reported the death of Bro. Ralph Rimple in March, putting our current membership at 93 MMs. He also announced that any member of the Lodge wishing to attend Grand Lodge must pre-register.

The petition of Mr. Jim Morris Fulton was read for a second time, the (favorable) report of the investigation committee read, and the ballot spread by the WM. The ballot was Fair in the South, Clear in the West, and Bright in the East. The WM announced that he will serve as Mr. Fulton’s mentor.

WB Jimmy Norton gave a brief presentation on the Royal Arch. He also briefly discussed some upcoming changes in the Edmonds Masonic Center.

The WM briefly discussed recent attempts at having a Lodge visit to LuzViMinda and Bethel #5.

The minutes were approved, and Lodge closed in due form by the WM, peace and harmony prevailing, at 9:45 pm.

17 March: Tonight we practiced for the 3rd degree for Bro. Alex. It has been a long time since we last Raised someone, and the practice was well worth it.  Also, the WM held a brief officer meeting before the practice.

 

3 March: The Lodge was opened on the FC Degree at 7:30 pm by WM John Hart at the Edmonds Masonic Center. Approximately 15 Brothers were present. WB Dennis Norton, Master of Genesis #305, arrived after the meeting commenced, and was accorded the Public Grand Honors.

Bro. Alex Boras completed the FC Posting Lecture with his mentor, WB Matt Appel. His Third Degree was set for 17 March, to be coordinated by the WM. The WM then called down to the First Degree at 7:55 pm, to admit Bro. Mike Lillie.

The minutes of the 3 February stated were read for information only, having been previously approved.

Correspondence to the Lodge was read, including the letter from Grand Lodge dated 12 February stating that Bro. Les Harrington has been dropped NPD from Sultan-Monroe #160. Also discussed were a letter regarding the DeMolay Conclave brochure ads, a letter regarding the distribution of Life Membership funds, and an e-mail from the Grand Master regarding the Civility Project.

The Secretary also reported the death of Bro. William Wright in January, putting our current membership at 94 MMs.

The WM announced the reduction of our Bikes-for-Books presentations to 2 per year from the current 3, and discussed the need to provide helmets.

On Suggestion of the WM, the Lodge voted to drop our current voicemail service with Segway Communications.

A petition was read from Mr. Jim Morris Fulton of Everett. A committee of VWB Robt. Nygren, WB Scott Wallinger and Bro. Larry Thomas was appointed to investigate and report back by the April meeting. The WM also reported he gave a petition to Mr. Reeyal Ali  of Mill Creek.

The Secretary invited consideration of the book club again. A due date of 17 March was established for Trestleboard submissions. The WM reported that he has received information on D&O insurance, and will pursue it with the SW, i.a.w. the motion from 3 February. There was a brief discussion of the Turkey Trot for the Lynnwood Food Bank. The SW gave a brief overview of long range planning.

The WM requested Brothers contact him with Masonic items they may wish to raffle off, or show at a show-and-tell type event.

The SW interviewed Bro. Mike Lillie before the Lodge, and Bro. Mike also agreed to provide dinner for April. Bro. Larry Thomas was thanked for the excellent turkey chili dinner that proceeded the meeting.

The SW also introduced a proposed revision to the by-laws moving the meeting date to the third Tuesday from the first Tuesday of the month. The proposal was slightly altered by the SW and vote of the Lodge to have the dark months be July and August, from the proposed June and July. A copy of the altered proposal is attached. The Secretary will distribute the change with the March Trestleboard for consideration at the April meeting.

The Lodge was called up the FC Degree, the minutes were approved, and Lodge closed in due form by the WM, peace and harmony prevailing, at 9:15 pm.

3 February: The lodge was opened on the EA Degree at 7:30 pm by WM John Hart at the Edmonds Masonic Center. Approximately 20 Brothers were present. WB James Moran, Master of Lodge Alba #315, was escorted to the East and accorded the Public Grand Honors. Also Introduced and given the Public Grand Honors were the Grand Lodge Committeemen present, including VWB Robert Nygren, WB James Norton, and WB Matthew Appel. VWB Richard Beers, Special Deputy to the Grand Master for the Everett Masonic Center, was likewise introduced and honored, as was VWB Chris Haynes, DDGM #2 on the occasion of his Official Visit.

The minutes of the 6 January stated and 20 January special meetingsfor the installation were read for information only, having been previously approved.

Correspondence to the Lodge was read, including the letter from Grand Lodge dated 27 January regarding the Suspension of 2 Brothers, and a letter from Grand Lodge dated 23 January stating that WB John Sutton has been dropped NPD from Skykomish Lodge. The Secretary provided the lease for the meetings at the Edmonds Masonic Center to the WM, who will review and submit it.

The Treasurer reported on the account balances. WB James G. Hamlin gave a satisfactory report from the Audit Committee.

The WM tabled further discussion on reducing our Bikes-for-Books presentations to 2 per year from the current 3.

The JD reported that he has contacted the Brother who repairs lodge Bibles, but that as he is currently in the hospital, the repairs will be delayed. Once begun, it will likely take 2 months.

A motion was made by the SW, then seconded and approved by a vote of the Lodge to permit the Lodge to spend up to $600 for 2015 obtaining director and officer insurance. The WM said he will contact the Grand Lodge Insurance team to proceed.

The JW reported that our next Lodge visit will be to Edmonds #165 on Thursday the 12th. He also stated that he needs reservations for the 11 Feb. sweetheart dinner to be to him immediately. WB Joshua Hamlin approached the East and presented the Lodge copy of the Master’s Book by Carl Claudy to the WM.

The WM will hold the next Lodge Planning meeting at his home on 17 Feb.

Our District Deputy of the Grand Master, VWB Chris Haynes delivered remarks on the occasion of his Official Visit. He began with greetings from the MWGM, and then the majority of the comments addressed the three primary needs of Lodges: ritual, membership, and financial. He also spoke of the ability of the District 2 Education Team to help the Lodge.

The minutes were approved, and Lodge closed in due form by VWB Chris Haynes, peace and harmony prevailing at 9:00 pm.

20 January: Tonight we initiated Bro. Mike Lillie into our Fraternity. Congratulations!

 

6 January: At tonight's meeting, 15 Brothers were present, all of Robert Burns #243. Lodge was opened on the Second Degree. WM John Hart began the meeting by reading section 23.2 from the WMC, regarding the Lodge of Sorrow. He then called WB Josh Hamlin to the East to close the Lodge of Sorrow from 2014 with a moment of silence, and following a unanimous vote of the Lodge, opened the Lodge of Sorrow for 2015. The names of the three Brothers who passed to the Celestial Lodge Above were read: Gib Hunter, James Earl McElroy, and Robert Curtis.

The Secretary read a dimit notice from Bro. Les Reed, and some other correspondence, including a note from the Grand Lodge of two Masons being expelled. Bills & receipts were read. On the fourth try, the Lodge passed a resolution regarding the dispensation of payout from the building fund. The Treasurer gave a brief report. The WM presented his budget for the year, and it was approved by the Lodge.

WB Matthew Appel reported briefly on the distribution of the Bikes-for-Books bicycles at the end of December. He then sought more attendees for the hockey game on 4 February, and encouraged people who wished to go to get in contact with him.

The WM made sure of the organization for the upcoming degree for Mike Lillie on the 20th of January. The January planning meeting will be held following the degree.
